James F. Smith Jr., 61, of Hanover died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at King's Daughters' Hospital.
He was born Jan. 30, 1945, in Louisville, Ky., the son of James Sr. and Margaret Hayden Smith. He worked for the Kroger Co. as head grocery clerk before retiring as dairy manager in 1999 after almost 40 years of service. He enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Calvert Moreland Smith, whom he married Dec. 6, 1974; four daughters, Sheila Ann Hatter of Mount Washington, Ky., Kimberly Dawn Gibson of Madison, Johnel Lynn Crouch of Louisville, Ky., and Angela Kay Grubbs of Hanover; one son, Donald G. Moreland of Lexington; one sister, Martha Sue Freeman of Shepherdsville, Ky.; three brothers, Charles Frederick Smith and Barry Lee Smith, both of Bardstown, Ky., and Francis Allen Smith of Louisville, Ky.; 15 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be at noon Friday at Vail-Holt Funeral Home Hanover Chapel. Burial will be in New Prospect Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. Friday until the service.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Lung Association or the St. Jude Children's Hospital. Contribution cards will be available at the funeral home.

Born Jan. 30, 1945, in Louisville, Smith retired from the Kroger Company as dairy manager.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Margaret Hayden and James Smith Sr.; and two grandchildren, Nicole Renee Trader and Samantha Noelle Gibson. Survivors include: his wife, Martha Calvert Moreland Smith of Hanover, Ind.; four daughters, Sheila Ann Hatter of Mt. Washington, Kimberly Dawn Gibson of Madison, Ind., Johnel Lynn Crouch of Louisville and Angela Kay Grubbs of Hanover, Ind.; a son, Donald G. Moreland of Lexington; a sister, Martha Sue Freeman of Shepherdsville; three brothers, Charles Frederick Smith of Bardstown, Barry Lee Smith of Bardstown and Francis Allen Smith of Louisville; and 15 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Dec. 22 at Vail-Holt Funeral Home - Hanover Chapel with burial in New Prospect Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the American Lung Association or the St. Jude Children's Hospital. Vail-Holt Funeral Homes was in charge of the arrangements.
