In loving memory of Dell Avery
Our dear friend and relative Idelle Avery, 78, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2010 due to complications after her recent hip surgery. She was born in the Bronx in 1931 to the late Joseph and Bertha Rothenberg and is survived by her half brother Maurice Rothenberg, cousins Harriet Yassky, Eileen Mann, Faye Rothenberg and Beverly Schulman.
Her devoted friends including Jim Murray, Debbie Buchman, Diane and Gene Kepple, and Selma Sparks called her Dellsie or Dell. She was a well-known fixture in the Brooklyn Heights community. As a young woman, Dell spent some years as a waitress in several popular diners in Manhattan. She also was a receptionist at one of Tin Pan Alley's music agencies where she met some prominent musicians. She eventually took up bookkeeping and for eighteen years was the bookkeeper at Cadman Towers, the Brooklyn Heights Mitchell Lama complex, until her retirement in 2005.
As an animal lover, Dell endeared herself to the Brooklyn Heights community. Her two dogs, Holly and Gypsy, gave her much love and companionship. Dell volunteered with the Brooklyn Heights Dog Owners Association (a rescue group) early in the decade. Can't you just picture her walking down the street, stopping everyone with a dog and making the biggest fuss over the animal.
Dell was active in community affairs, campaigning for Assemblywoman Joan Millman, and acting as the Treasurer for the 84th Precinct's Benevolent Society right up until the time of her passing. Since 1995, she was a member of the St. Charles Jubilee Senior Center, playing cards regularly and, since 2009, serving on its Advisory Council.
To quote her second cousin, former City Councilman David Yassky, "Whenever I met someone from Cadman Towers, I would ask if they knew my cousin Dell. I always got a "yes" with a warm smile. I'm sure being related to Dell got me many votes."
For her contributions to the community and her friendship to all she met and touched, she will be sorely missed by friends, neighbors and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
Special friend to Joseph Meneses, Anthony Loscinto & David Vallese
Dell was greeted at the rainbow bridge by her two precious dogs Holly & Gypsy
