DIED AT HIS RESIDENCE NEAR GREENVILLE,
AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA. SEP. 14, 1896.
THOMAS ALEXANDER BROWNLEE
T.A. Brownlee, son of Alexander Brownlee, was born in the same house in which he died, 7 June, 1842. At the age of 19, he entered the Confederate Army, and was during the whole period of the war an active and brave member of the 5th regiment in the historic Stonewall brigade and was severely wounded.
He was a man of classical education, a reader and thinker and a leader of public opinion in a quiet way in his neighborhood, though his inhate modesty never allowed his sober wishes to stray from the paths of private life.
Mr. Brownlee was a great sufferer for a many of years before his death and bore his chastening with christian fortitude and patience.
He never married, but lived with a widowed sister, upon the farm which had been in the family for generations.
He was frequently called upon by the court and his neighbors to fulfill public duties, which he did wisely and well, but never shrank from public life.
He is survived be three sisters, Mrs. Mary Miller, Mrs. Melissa Mish, and Mrs. Margaret Wilson. Mr. Brownlee will be greatly missed by all his neighborhood for he was a kind neighbor, a part friend, generous to the poor and charitable to all.
