JOHN WILLIAM "JACK" PURNELL JR.
PURNELL, John William "Jack" Jr., 78, of Fredericksburg, son of the late Ida and John W. Purnell Sr., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 after a long battle with cancer.
Jack was born in Richmond and attended John Marshall High School and Smithdeal Massey College. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954 aboard the U.S.S. Curtiss (AV-4), Seaplane Tender, witnessing the experimental testing of the atomic, hydrogen and nuclear bombs. Upon completing his four years in the Navy, he was employed by Virginia Machinery and Well Company, now VAMAC, Inc. and retired after 53 years of service. He worked in outside and inside sales as well as Branch Manager of the Fredericksburg branch in 1972. Jack had been a member of the Spotswood Baptist Church since 1972, transferring membership from Ginter Park Baptist in Richmond.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty; daughter, Cheryl Harris and her husband, Ward; three sons, Michael, William and Randy; three grandchildren, Angela, Diane and Adam; five great-grandchildren; sister, June Swanson and her husband, Gordon; nephew, Kenneth; and niece, Pamela. He was preceded in death by his son, John Eric, in 1997.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 5, at Spotswood Baptist Church, with Rev. Jim Stone officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors. Pallbearers will be Larry Stewart, Aubrey Payne, John Durham, Bill Tribble, Joe Cola, Jim Yurgel, Bob Hitt, Larry Norfolk and Carroll Carter.
