Minnie was the daughter of the late John Calvin and Martha (Slaven) Smith. She was a resident of Oneida, Tennessee and Whitley City, Kentucky most of her life.
She married John Henry Thomas
on July 12, 1922 in Oneida, Tennessee. He preceded her in death in 1948. She married Rev. John Bryant in Whitley City, Kentucky in 1957. Rev. Bryant preceded her in death in 1965. She married John Kidd on December 4, 1968 in Jellico, Tennessee. John Kidd preceded her in death in 1977.
Minnie moved to Oregon in 1978 where she lived with sons in Coos Bay and Myrtle Creek. She was a member of the Tri City, Oregon Church of God.
My grandma gave birth to four sons, but she raised many children during her life. She helped raise her younger sisters, brothers, and her first husband John Henry's children. I was told by Rilda Thomas Burke's daughter that Rilda had said "After my own mother had died, God could not have given me a better mother." My grandma was said to have been loving and caring to all the children she raised. I believe this because she was loving and caring to me.
She was a mother and a grandma; we miss her dearly.
A couple of memories that I will always have of my grandma:
*When I was 9 years old, my grandma was getting ready to fix dinner. She took me out to the garden and dug up some potatoes. I did not know that potatoes grew under the soil.
*When my grandma would send letters to me, she would always mail a piece of gum with the letter. I would chew the gum and read the letter at the same time.
*Grandma prepared meals for the family with love. She was a great cook and enjoyed sharing her cooking. She made good Pumpkin bread. I have tried to make Pumpkin bread, but it has never turned out as good as grandma's.
*Grandma could sew and she made some beautiful pillows. I remember she made pillows of all colors and placed them on and above a sofa.
*Grandma always introduced her three boys, who were grown men, the same way to everybody. She would say, "This is Gabriel my oldest boy. This is Aaron my middle boy. This is Cleophia my baby boy."
