Enlisted for Civil War service in Company H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Aug. 7, 1862, at Elyria, OH(Lorain County) as a private for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Farmer. Captured at Dandridge, TN, Jan. 18, 1864. Survived imprisonment at Andersonville Prison in GA. Transferred to Florence Prison, Florence, SC where he died from disease, Oct. 16, 1864.

He lies buried in a trench as one of 2,300 unknown Union soldiers who died at the prison as prisoners of war Between Sept. 1864 and Feb. 1865. Burials are in trenches indicated by stone markers at the end of each row showing the number of individuals placed there.
