Arthur enlisted for Civil War army service in Company C, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 22, 1862, at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County) for a 3-year term of service. Occupation: Moulder. On July 1, 1863 he was promoted to corporal. He was wounded in his hip and an arm, November 25, 1863, at the Battle of Armstrong's Hill, south of Knoxville Tennessee and subsequently died of those wounds in a hospital at Knoxville, December 4, 1863. His name is on Panel #13 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio.

The National Cemetery System will not correct the incorrect date of death, shown as March 18, 1863, on his headstone. Knoxville was still held by Confederate forces at that time. Supposedly notation about the incorrect date was made in the cemetery office at Chattanooga National Cemetery where the Knoxville National Cemetery records are kept.
