Our beloved classmate James entered into his heavenly rest on November the fifth of 2010 at his residence in Hayesville, NC. James was a life-long native resident of Clay County, the son of the late John and Ida Belle Barnard Smart. For over 37 years James served the community as the assistant manager of the local Building Supply Company. James was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a member of and served as deacon of the Downings Creek Baptist Church. James loved to fish as well as to greet everyone with his famous smile!
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Jewell Barrett and Willis Moore.
He is survived by his wife or 47 years, Mary Evelyn Moss Smart, his daughter, Christi Hughes and her husband, Stacy of Murphy, NC., four sisters, Doris Moore of Hayesville, Helen Bryant and her husband Gene of Ft. Mills, SC., and Mary Penland and her husband, Norman of Greenville, SC., and Emogene Barrett of Hayesville, and his grandson Isaiah Hughes of Murphy.
Funeral services for James were held Monday, November 8, of 2010 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Hayesville. Officiating were Rev. Jack Sellers and Rev. Denny Moss. Eulogy was given by Tim Barrett. James was laid to rest in the Oak Forest United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hayesville. Serving as pallbearers were Gary Rogers, Gary Reffit, Johnny Burch, Tommy Mayfield, Dan McGlamery, Wade (Gator) Henson, Ronnie Smith, Larry Sellers and Stacy Hughes. Honorary pallbearers were Isaiah Hughes, Tim Barrett, Ed Rogers, Ben Rogers. Ronni Burch, David Burch, Larry Garrett, Ray Crawford and Jimmy Watkins.
A reception for friends was held by the family the evening of Sunday, November 7th., 2010 at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Hayesville
Memories of James will continue to linger in the hearts of his classmates as well as with family and his many friends. The love he had for others he carries in his heart on his journey through eternity.
