Cyrus was born in Ohio but moved with his family to Lee County Illinois, then were the early settlers of Oxford Township, Johnson County, Iowa. He served in the 1st Iowa Infantry, Company B and was wounded at Wilson's Creek Missouri. After the war he married Louisa Sies on May 15, 1865 in Johnson County. They had at least nine children all born in Iowa. After 1883 the family moved to Franklin County, Nebraska. In 1890 they moved to Cheyenne County, Kansas where Cyrus bought land in Nuttycombe Township. His obituary appeared on February 15, 1923 in the St. Francis Herald, Cheyenne County, Kansas.
