Jean Baptiste Pevauteau (Peveto) Settler & Land Holder Jean Baptiste Pevauteau (Peveto) was born in St. Martin du Tours, St. Martin Parish, LA. on November 30, 1804. Jean was the son of Michael Anzero Pevauteau (Peveto), a first generation Ameriacan of French lineage, and Apolonea Broussard of Acadian ancestry. Jean married Mary Pauline “Polly” Linchcombe (Linscomb), the daughter of Joseph Basile Linchcombe, originally from Virginia, and Mary Polly Gilchrist of Acadian descent on April 25, 1824 in Opelousas, LA. The first of Jean and Polly’s children were born in the Opelousas, LA area. In 1836 these children: Joseph, Cleonize, John, Samuel, and Michael, migrated to Texas with their parents. As with others from the Opelousas area the Pevauteau’s settled in the then Jefferson County. It appears that the Linscombs and Pevateaus joined the Harmons, and Blands. The Pevauteau’s established their farm in the Orange County area. The children of Jean and Polly born in Texas were: Alford, Robert, Mary, Elizabeth, Collins, Caland, Caleb, and Samuel. The 1840 Tax List for Jefferson County, Texas notes John B. Pevateau with livestock of 35 horses and one cow. Reference: 1. “Our Pevoto Family”, Laura Dingle Ewing, March 1981, Wimberley, p.212
