Bertha Barnes, 87, of Belgrade, passed away May 27, 2001. She was born November 5, 1913, in Juda, Wisconsin, the daughter of Albert and Frieda (Marteneau) Schneiter. When she was three, the family moved to the Gallatin Valley, settling in the Central Park area. She attended the Central Park and Manhattan schools. Her father Albert built one of the first cheese factories in the Gallatin Valley at Central Park in 1916. She worked in the cheese factory making cheese until she was 19 years old.

She met Clifford Barnes and later they were married for time and all eternity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 4, 1934.

They farmed west of Belgrade for a number of years. During that time they enjoyed playing at many dances in the Valley. The couple moved to Manhattan and lived there until their retirement, when they moved west of Belgrade. They also assisted their son Lance organize the Steam and Power Threshing Show.

Survivors include: her son Lance (Virginia) Barnes of Belgrade; granddaughter Lanciene (Jon) Ziegler; great grandchildren Kimberly and Matt Ziegler; all of Rapid City, S.D.; grandson Ward (Teri) Barnes; great grandson Justin Barnes; all of Belgrade; granddaughter Laurie (Wayne) Ford; great grandchildren Casey and Layne Ford; all of Livingston, Mont.; daughter Shirley (Paul) Bragg of Olympia, Wash.; grandson Dennis (LaRea) Bragg; great grandchildren Anne and Jay; all of Sequim, Wash.; grandson Paul (Michelle) Bragg; great grandchildren, Ashley, Sara and Jenny; all of West Richland, Wash.; her brother Walter (Betty) Schneiter of Belgrade; her sister Maria Curtis of Manhattan; and her sister-in-law Barbara Schneiter of Belgrade.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Clifford; an infant son, Clifford Jr.; her parents; a sister, Lyndia Hungate; and her brother, Armean Schneiter.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Mary 30, 2001 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Interment to follow at Meadow View Cemetery.

Visitation Tuesday May 29 at Dahl Funeral Chapel 6 to 9 p.m.
