Thomas was a soldier in Captain John Lewis' Company, 2nd Virginia State Regiment, June and July 1778 during the Revolutionary War. He was also reportedly in the Battle of Fort Sullivan, Charleston, South Carolina on June 28, 1776. He left Fauquier County, Virginia around 1789 and went to Washington County, Kentucky. In 1779 he married Sarah Henry and they moved to Perry County, Indiana as early as 1807, settling in the northern end of Tobin Township.

Thomas and Sarah had at least five children: Uriah, William, Josiah, Eli and Joseph. Joseph died in infancy in 1799, while the other four joined their parents in Perry County, Indiana soon after 1807.
