David James Harvey Kerr was born March 21, 1837 in Waxhaws, Lancaster Co., S.C. He was the son of Jennings Banks Kerr and the former Miss Arpeliza Jane Walkup. David graduated from Erskine College in 1858. He continued to study theology at Erskine Theological Seminary and was licensed by the Second Presbytery in August 1860. The Presbytery Synod sent him to Arkansas the same year, where he preached at the Pisgah Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church until 1863.
On March 5, 1862, David married Nancy Reid Oates, daughter of John Franklin Oates and Eliza E. Oates in Pottesville, Arkansas. After their wedding, they moved to Monticello, in Drews County, Arkansas; where Rev. Kerr taught school and supplied church vacancies. In 1866, Rev. Kerr switched to the Southern Presbyterian Church and preached at the Calvary Presbyterian in Johnsville, Bradley County, Arkansas. Sadly here he officiated his wife's funeral on May 2, 1874 and he himself died 7 days later. On his deathbed he requested that his four boys and infant daughter be cared for and brought up to fear the Lord by his three sisters, Josephine, Nancy, and Laura. The oldest son Jennings Banks was taken to his sister Nancy Kerr Brown, his infant daughter, Laura Josephine to sister, Laura Kerr DeWolfe, and the three youngest boys Frank, John, and David to Josephine Kerr Sloan, wife of Rev. Dr. Henry T. Sloan pastor of Cedar Springs Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Bradley, South Carolina.
Reverend David Kerr is buried beside his beloved wife, ‘Nannie' in the Calvary Presbyterian Church cemetery.
