17 June 1753 - Stephen Gowen was born
to William Gowen and Judey, his wife.
Occupations - Constable; Postman;
Town treasurer; Justice of the Peace;
Selectman for several years;
He was on a committee selected by Sanford
to oppose the 'Alien and Sedition' acts passed in 1798 by President John Adams.
On January 7, 1772 Stephen came to Sanford with his father.
In December of 1776, the Governor of Rhode Island solicited the aid of Massachusetts in defense of that state. Stephen Gowen [Private] served between May 19 to July 18, 1777 in Captain Abel Moulton's company of Colonel Jonathan Titcomb's regiment.
Stephen built a dam across the river and completed a grist-mill, running one set of stones. About three years later he and his sons, James and Walter erected a saw-mill below and adjoining; the capacity of this mill was such that 8 or 10 bushels of corn could
be ground per day.
Stephen died at his residence in Sanford.
