Deseret News Friday, September 3, 1993 Obituary

A Millcreek youth was shot to death Wednesday night during a gang-related confrontation at the Triad Center.

"It appears to be nothing more than statements about gangs that started the whole thing," said Salt Lake Police Lt. Marty Vuyk. Aaron Chapman, 17, was shot once in the chest with a .22 handgun and died at LDS Hospital about 11:15 p.m.

The shooting occurred about 10:45 p.m. after a concert featuring the bands Roger and Zap at the downtown Triad Center amphitheater. Chapman and a group of friends were driving out of the parking lot when another group of juveniles walking near an exit ramp on 300 West began "exchanging words" with them.

The second group began striking the people inside the car, Vuyk said. Chapman and the others got out of the car and the fight continued. A 17-year-old Rose Park youth driving by on 300 West saw the altercation and jumped out of his car to join the melee.

"He went to assist his friends, his gang buddies," Vuyk said.

During the fight, the 17-year-old pulled out a gun and shot Chapman in the chest. Friends drove Chapman to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Salt Lake police officers arrested the Rose Park youth about 5 a.m. Thursday at the home of a friend. The gun believed used in the shooting was also recovered.

Police do not know if Chapman was a gang member but said he associated with gang members. The suspect is a known gang member.
