Birth: Jul. 6, 1922
Glen Ellyn

Illinois, USA
Death: Mar. 24, 1945, India

S/Sgt. John E. Cunningham was the 5th of seven children and youngest son of Vincent and Nelle (Ellis) Cunningham. Both parents were Salvation Army officers. The family moved to Atlanta in 1929. Originally, John was a B-24 gunner on the Robert Kimbrough crew, 9th Bomb Squadron, 7th Bomb Group, 10th Air Force, India-Burma Theater. When Kimbrough and his copilot were transferred, Cunningham and the rest of the crew became "floaters" assigned to other crews whenever they were needed. John became a permanent replacement for S/Sgt. Harold F. Peters on the Margolies crew after Peters was sent home due to severe amoebic dysentery and a dying father. Cunningham was killed, along with three others, when their B-24L Liberator suffered engine problems, forcing the pilot to ditch in India's Sundarbans, a mangrove swampland bordering the Bay of Bengal. Both John's and Edwin Scranton's parachutes failed to open in time. Both men and the pilot, along with the bomber, remain missing in what now is Bangladesh. The body of a 4th crew member was recovered. John was 22. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Unit Citation, and (posthumously) the Purple Heart. They are officially honored on Tablets of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Philippines. (bio by: wnw)
Note: S/Sgt. Cunningham, Lt. Scranton, and Lt. Margolies are honored with memorial headstones at Arlington National Cemetery. A full military honors ceremony was held there for relatives of the missing trio May 26, 2005. They are officially honored on Tab
