How to spell this Name. This is a question as people get all stressed out about how to spell a name. However, before everyone starts getting all stressed out it's important to realize that the spelling of the name has changed over the centuries.

What's important to understand is that there isn't something that we can label the 'original form'. Why? Well, back before we started to write everything down names, place names and the names of everyday objects weren't standardized. So, really what I'm saying is that there wasn't a spellchecker or a proper way of spelling a specific name, or even saying it. What's clear is that before most people could write, the name would sound slightly different, depending on the accent of the person trying to say it. The name was pronounced differently by people with a different local Gaelic accents, back in Scotland. Our problem is that today we like to think that the name 'should' be one 'standard' form or another.

The Gaelic was anglicized by English speakers when the Scots began to travel. People began to write the name down.
We can say that the name changed when it was used in Gaelic into English.

This meant that when it changed from Gaelic to English and people wrote the name in English, they also tried to represent the sounds that they heard. This was a tough task as you can imagine. So, we still can't be certain which form is 'correct'..So some members of the family use MacKenzie, rather than McKenzie.

In the 19th century and early 20th century, some people like to use the 'Mac' variant in order to distinguish themselves from the Scots who had lived in Ireland, and supposedly wrote their names using the letters 'MC' rather than 'MAC'.

It is also debatable as to whether 'only the 'Scot-Irish' used the 'Mc' format. The name has been written in documents, often in the 'Mc' format or the 'Mac' format. Some members use MAC and others use MC...we're all the same family regardless of the spelling.

Just to make things even more complicated...some families capitalize the 'K' while others use the small 'k'.
