Emlyn Hughes
Birth: Aug. 28, 1947
Death: Nov. 9, 2004

Legendary Liverpool and England football (soccer)player. Born in Barrow-in-Furness, Hughes was signed by the great Bill SHankly for £65,000 in March 1967 from Blackpool. Hughes quickly proved his worth, playing in practically any defensive position. His boundless enthusiasm, energy and bravery earned him the nickanme of "Crazy Horse". In 1977 he became Liverpool captain and, as Shankly had predicted, he later became captain of England and earned 65 caps for his country. He left Anfield in 1979, later playing for Wolves, Rotherham, Mansfield and Swansea. It was his time with Liverpool that would cement his place in football history, winning fourleague titles, two UEFA cups, the FA Cup and most famously leading the clubs first European Cup victory in 1977. After his playing career had ended he became a well-known face on TV, particularly on BBC's "A Question of Sport". Following a battle with a brain tumor, Emlyn Hughes passed away in 2004.
