Edward Bassett was 19 when he was mustered into service on April 29, 1861. On December 11, 1862, the First Minnesota joined the battle at Fredericksburg, Maryland. The regiment was stationed on the right of the Union line. From that position the soldiers saw the fruitless assault on the Rebel position at Marye's Heights. The First was initially ordered into the attack, but the orders were countermanded. On October 14, 1863, he suffered a slight wound to his head at the battle of Bristow Station. A month later the First was on the move again and engaged the Rebels at a place called Mine Run. Edward was mustered out with the regiment on May 5, 1864. He chose not to reenlist in the First Battalion. However, on Feb 21, 1865, he enlisted in Company L of the First Minnesota Heavy Artillery. Several men from his old unit were now in service with this unit, including its Colonel, his old commander, William Colvill. Edward was promoted to sergeant four days after enlisting, undoubtedly because of his experience with Minnesota's other "First". They were stationed in Tennessee, where they trained and did guard duty. The unit was mustered out on Sept 27, 1865.
Edward was married on March 22, 1871, at Faribault, MN.
