Birth: Jul. 7, 1920
Oakland
Alameda County
California, USA
Death: Oct. 22, 2006
Rocklin
Placer County
California, USA

Born in Oakland, California, he spent most of his life living in Placer County, California. He attended the one-room school house in Iowa Hill, CA. He and his brother, Stanley had to relocate to his Grandmother's home in Oakland, CA to attend high school because there was no transportation to Placer High School in Auburn, CA from Iowa Hill at that time. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1937. Finding work difficult during the depression, he went back to Iowa Hill and started his first job working at a dredge mining operation in Indian Canyon. After one winter, he went to work for the McGetchin Mining Company and worked in the mines for several years. He again relocated in order to work for the Mare Island Naval Base and commuted home to the Colfax area on weekends, where he met his first wife, Arvilla Hunt, and married in 1941. He joined the Navy in 1942 after the war broke out and attended boot camp in San Diego. He was stationed first in Oklahoma, then in Florida. He was then sent overseas in the Atlantic aboard the U.S. Barlar,, then aboard the sea plane tender USS Alabama for several years in the South Pacific. While he was at sea, a son named John Avery Macy was born to him and passed away while still an infant. Another son, was born in 1945. When he was discharged from the service in 1946, he returned to Colfax and went through a divorce. He took a job with PG&E and for the next 12-13 years lived in PG&E camps all over Northern California. He met and married Georgia Mae Hilton in 1951. They bought a 40 foot travel trailer and moved to PG&E camps for 2-3 weeks at a time. A daughter was born in 1953 while they were living in Lodi and another daughter while they were living in Perkins. After the birth of their 2nd daughter, they sold their trailer and settled in Eden Valley, right outside of Weimar. Herb worked for PG&E until his youngest daughter asked who he was, then he quit and went to work for a local company, R. J. Miles as an Equipment Operator and Truck Driver for several years. He then landed a job in Road Maintenance for the County of Placer until his retirement in 1979. He and Georgia moved next to his youngest daughter in 1991 in order for her to care for them until their deaths.
