Research by J. Kelsey Jones:
In the History of Sussex and Warren Counties, New Jersey by James Snell it is related that "John Dewitt came from Connecticut in 1772, and chose a location near the Frankford Plains church. The homestead has been for successive generations, and is still, in possession of the family." John DeWitt evidently came to Frankford much earlier than 1772 as Joseph Stout deeded 52 acres to John DeWitt, 15 Nov 1763 (East Proprietors Liber AB6:10) and the land in Newton, "being on the head of Papecotting (Papakating)" was surveyed for John DeWitt, 14 July 1768 (East Proprietors S6:19). He is perhaps the “John Dawets born in the Raretans banns published 2 June and married 20 July 1759 at Macheckemeck to Elonora Wesval born at Maggemek.” John was taxed in Newton township in 1773 with 100 acres and 14 horses and or cattle. Taxed there in 1774 with 70 acres and 14 cattle. He is perhaps the John DeWitt who purchased 150 acres in Newton with Job Cosad and Annanias Seely from John Stevens Esq., and his wife Elizabeth of Hunterdon County, 7 Jan 1779. He is perhaps the John DeWitt who purchased 140 acres in Newton 18 Oct 1780 from Ebenezer Cowell and 10 acres from Ebenezer Cowell on "branch of Pappacotting (Papakating)," 25 Oct 1780. The township of Frankford was created in 1797 from Newton township. John died 10 Mar 1804 intestate, inventory dated 11 Apr 1804.

Indenture dated 1806 between John DeWitt and Samuel Price in Frankford township states "whereas John DeWitt late Frankford deceased died intestate seized and possessed of certain lands in the aforesaid township leaving as his heirs at law one brother named Isaac DeWitt and representatives of a brother named Peter DeWitt and the representatives of a brother named Abraham DeWitt the representatives of a sister named Catherine Kenney, the said John DeWitt of the first part being the representative of Abraham DeWitt deceased and brother of the said John DeWitt deceased who claims two-sevenths of all the land claimed."

In 1809, Peter DeWitt and Jacob DeWitt of Milford County, Ohio appointed Zachariah Price DeWitt their attorney to recover from the administrators of John DeWitt, deceased, any money or property due them as the lawful heirs of Jacob DeWitt Sr., deceased, the lawful brother of John DeWitt.

On 6 Nov 1808 Isaac DeWitt and Jerusha his wife of Frankford township sold four acres in Frankford township to Abraham DeWitt, "being part of the real estate of the late John DeWitt, deceased," "by which (Isaac) claims right unto as heir at law of the late John DeWitt deceased and by purchase of the different heirs at law of sd John DeWitt deceased" and also one lot of land situate in the township containing twelve acres and known as a timber lot.

We know from the 1806 and 1809 records there were the following siblings:
Isaac DeWitt m. Jerusha Price.
John DeWitt b. Sept 1731 d. 10 Mar 1804.
Abraham DeWitt dec'd in 1806. Had son John DeWitt living in 1806.
Catherine DeWitt Kenney living 1806.
Peter DeWitt dec'd in 1806 perhaps the Peter b. c. 1722 d. Oct 1776 54y buried Frankford Plains.
Jacob DeWitt dec'd in 1809 and had sons Jacob and Peter in Ohio.
