Listed in the 1850 census under the name of Aikin, born in Ireland, and living in Coshocton County, Ohio. Occupation, shoe maker. Listed in the 1860 census under the name of Aiken, with wife Sarah, and children, Caroline, Mary, and Charles.

His widow, Sarah E. Moore Akins, applied for a Widow's pension. She later married Josiah Green. She died July 4, 1919, according to a letter to the pension board from her daughter, Carrie Beans. Children mentioned in file include: Caroline b. 1851, Mary b. 1852, Charles b. 1858, and Lucy b. 1862.
