Civil War Nurse - Sarah Elizabeth Dysart, the daughter of William Patterson Dysart and Elizabeth Bell; was born in the family home on December 6, 1837. During a visit to Harrisburg, Sarah heard Abraham Lincoln speak of the need for nurses. Sarah volunteered her services to the U.S. Government and was assigned to the 12th U.S. Army Corps, Heavy Artillery. War Department records show that the name, Sallie E. Dysart, nurse, appeared on a weekly report of the 12th Army Corps Hospital, Harper's Ferry, West Virginia on May 29, 1863. She next appears with the General Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, through 1864; followed by service in Chattanooga, and Gettysburg. Sarah was the only Civil War nurse from Blair County and is listed in Pennsylvania's Notable Women, 1926-1931. Sarah died at the family home on February 1, 1909 and is buried in the estate.
