Daniel was a 13-year-old boy who lived in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. He was on his way to catch a bus to the Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre where he was going to get a haircut and buy Christmas presents for his family. He was last seen trying to hail the bus with a man standing a distance behind Daniel, and another man slightly farther away at the time. When he failed to return home, a massive search and investigation followed. His case has had regular media coverage since 2003, and a massive reward was offered. Police believe he was abducted and then murdered by a known pedophile, Douglas Jackway, who'd been released from prison one month before Daniel's abduction. Due to the efforts of his parents, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation was established to help families of missing children, to educate children about personal safety, and to raise awareness throughout Australia of the dangers of predatory criminals. Every year on October 30th, a "Day for Daniel" is held for the purpose of protecting children from harm, and his favorite color - red - is worn in support of that effort. Daniel has never been found, and this is his only place of remembrance.
Update 8/29/2011: Douglas Jackway was finally arrested and has confessed to Daniel's murder. Daniel's remains have been recovered. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his surviving parents; his twin; and many other relatives and friends.
Many thanks to SerenityNow for sponsoring Daniel's memorial, and for the above update.
Note: 7-6-2013: An unathenticated source has indicated to me that the accused murderer of Daniel Morcombe is NOT Douglas Jackway, but Brett Peter Cowan. I'm currently awaiting verification of that information.
