At the age of 19 Linnie married George Sheppard, who had recently immigrated from England. They were married in 1876, and honeymooned at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
Melinda and George Sheppard lived for a time with her widowed mother, Abby Sead Scull. Seven children were born, although two died in infancy. Their second born, Sarah May, died at the age of 16 while employed at the local mill. Three sons and one daughter grew up and married.
Melinda Sheppard was very active in the First Baptist Church of Bristol, where she volunteered with the Sunday school and the church. At the time of her death she was its oldest member.
George and Melinda Sheppard helped organize the local division of the Sons of Temperance. They were enthusiastic members and associated with the Grand Lodge in Philadelphia.
Melinda Sheppard suffered from a lingering illness during her final two years. She was survived by four children, Harry Sheppard. A. Willis Sheppard, George E. Sheppard and Edith V. Mount. Grandchildren at the time were Doris E. Mount and Lawrence Sheppard.
Memorial services were offered by the Sons of Temperance with burial at the Bristol Cemetery with the service by Rev. A. w. Anderson, pastor of the First Baptist Church. An obituary was published in the Bristol Courier.
Another child in addition to those linked below was William Henry "Harry" Sheppard, born 08 Sept. 1877. Harry resided in Essex NJ for many years.
