Zella Cox Tull Karet Biography
Click here for more details on the Cox-Nicholson family.
Zella was born 16 February 1883 in Streator, La Salle Co., Illinois, the daughter of theater artist and architect Frank Cox and Clara Atkins. She lived at 104 N. Second St. with her mother. At the time of the 1910 Census she gave her occupation as art teacher at a studio.
Around 1913, she married Frank Henry TULL. It is a mystery as to how they met, since she was an artist in Streator, Illinois and Frank was a blue-collar worker in Johnson County, Kansas.
Frank and Zella had two daughters, Jacqueline, born in Streator, Illinois in 1915, and Gwendolyn, born in El Dorado, Kansas in 1916. At the time of Frank's registration for the World War I draft on 5 June 1917, the family was living at 514 Washington, El Dorado, Butler Co., Kansas.
By the 1920 Census on 15 January 1920, Zella is back in Streator, Illinois, living at 104 N. Second St., with mother Clara Atkins PEDDICORD and daughters Jacqueline and Gwendolyn. Zella is listed as Head of Household. Zella's marital status is given as "M", not "D" or "W", yet Frank is nowhere to be found.
Later in 1920, Zella, her daughters, her mother, her sister Myrtle, and Myrtle's husband George LOENARDY moved to Los Angeles Co., California. The 1922 Pasadena City Directory still shows her as Zella Tull, but according to the 1926 Voter Registration records, Zella is "Mrs. Zella Karet" and was living at 444 S. Hope, Los Angeles; she was registered as a Socialist. Her occupation was artist.
According to Zella's Social Security Application, on 17 May 1937 she was living at 153 S. Rampart St., New Orleans, Louisiana and working for the WPA Education Program at the 813 Canal Bank Building. In 1945, Polk's New Orleans City Directory shows her living at 2816 Milan, New Orleans.
At the time of her death on 11 December 1971 from congestive heart failure, she lived at 4808 Newlands St., Metarie, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. As a longtime Christian Scientist, she donated her body to Louisiana State University for medical research.
