James was the son of Benjamin Bourland and Agnes Nancy McElroy. James served Texas first leading a group of volunteers protecting settlers against attacking Indians along the border of Texas. Second during the Civil War, he commanded the 3rd Brigade against the Indians in protecting settlers. He ended his miltiary carerr as Lt. Col.

James married twice. First to Catherine Wells in 1822 in South Carolina and in 1854 to Nancy Salina Barnett.
