Harold Garnder was proud of his part in building U.S. 12 in the 1920's. The road went past the family farm at "Dead Man's Curve," where he remembered 20 traffic fatalities in his lifetime. He was also proud that he never smoked or drank, McCall said.
He married late in life, and his wife died in 1978. He died in 1996 at the age of 92. He had never been in a hospital until a car crash ended his life.
