Mass Murderer. Between December 31st, 1972 and January 7th, 1973, Essex killed nine people, including five police officers, and wounded thirteen others in the largest shooting spree in the history of New Orleans, Louisiana and the deadliest days ever for the New Orleans Police Department, He is most infamous for his attack on the Downtown Howard Johnson's Hotel on Loyola Avenue in New Orleans on January 7th, 1973 where he shot and killed a number of police, firefighters, hotel employees, and guests and set several fires. He was shot and killed on the rooftop of the hotel at approximately 9:30 that evening by sharpshooters in a U.S. Marine Corps. helicopter and on the roofs of adjacent buildings. Much of the attack was shown live on New Orleans television. It is believed that Essex turned to violence in response to virulent white racism he experienced while serving in the U.S. Navy. He became involved in some black radical groups in San Diego while stationed there. Following his involuntary special discharge, he had contact with a wing of the Black Panthers in New York. When police searched Essex's apartment following the attacks, they found the walls covered with racist graffiti with the words "hate" and "kill" repeated over and over again.
