Mary Joyce Coldwell was born the third daughter of seven to Ralph Raleigh Coldwell and Harriet Elizabeth Garrison Coldwell in a rural community near Paris, Texas. All of the daughters were born in Paris, Texas except the youngest daughter, who was born in Manitou, Oklahoma. Harriett met Ralph when she taught in a one-teacher country school in the Bairdstown community near Paris, Texas in Lamar County. Ralph bought her box supper as an introduction. Mary Joyce started to school in Oklaunion, Texas, moved to Manitou, Oklahoma in the second grade, then to Sulphur Springs, Texas in the fourth grade (the Great Depression Years). As a sophomore in high school, the family moved to West Monroe, Louisiana where Mary Joyce graduated from Ouachita Parish High School and then Northeast Junior College (later Northeast University) in Monroe, Louisiana. Five of the sisters graduated from OPHS.

Because Mary Joyce was always a Texan at heart, she returned to Texas to enter the University of Texas John Sealy College of Nursing in Galveston, Texas. Knowing how strongly his daughter desired education, her father attempted to obtain a loan for her education and after the banks denied the loan, he was given a loan by a local doctor, which both greatly appreciated. After graduation and becoming a registered nurse, Mary Joyce first worked in OB and newborn nursing at Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. After two years, she went to work in OB and nursery at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas so she could attend the University of Texas where she graduated with a BA degree in English. At the University of Texas, Austin (in the library), she met and later married Leroy Page Mays. She said as she was working in the library she felt someone's eyes upon her and she looked up and saw Page looking at her. Since he was so shy she went up to him and asked him "Do you want to go for a cup of coffee?". Mary Joyce and Page had three children, all living, born in Freer, Texas. Page's first teaching job was in Freer, and Mary Joyce was the Supervisor of the Thomas-Spann Hospital and Clinic in Freer, Texas. They moved to Santa Anna, Texas in 1953 where Page taught English and Speech in the Santa Anna High School. Page was a native of Coleman County, having attended the first grade through high school in Santa Anna, Texas.

Mary Joyce worked as OR and OB supervisor as well as LVN instructor at the Overall-Morris Hospital in Coleman. Mary Joyce and Page divorced in 1967. She attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood Howard Payne College and graduated with a MA degree in English while she worked as the Director of Nursing in a nursing home in Coleman for six years. She attended Texas Woman's University in Dallas for a MS degree in nursing and a Ph.D from TWU in Denton, Texas. In 1973 she became an instructor in the Department of Nursing at Angelo State University, and later became full professor and Head of the Department of Nursing in 1982. She retired from full-time teaching in the fall of 1994 and became an adjunct professor at ASU. She later went on to obtain the education and certification required for Nurse Practioner and worked at the Veterans Administration in San Angelo, Texas prior to her death.

She joined the AAUW in 1982 and became a member of Reader's PS in 1990. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, and traveling and her R & R in Las Vegas.
