Daniel was the eighth of 10 children born to Peter and Elizabeth Abney Black. He married Julia Anna Morgan 20 Dec 1855. They had five known children: Cordelia M. who married William Christian Scarbrough; Charles Martin who married Nancy May Whiteside; Effie M.; Irene M. who married Sims Dodds; and Julia Morgan.
Daniel is found on the following US Censuses: 1850 Subdivision 30, Benton Co, AL; 1860 Ranges 8&9, Calhoun Co, AL; 1870 Township 15, Calhoun Co, AL; 1880 White Plains, Calhoun Co, AL.
According to the Muster Roll for the 51st AL Cavalry, Daniel enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army 27 May 1862 in Oxford, AL. He was detailed as a blacksmith by Col. Morgan, was with Captain Coleman's wagons, and was paroled at Talladega by General Chrysler 21 May 1865 as a 3rd Sergeant.
