Duwane "Dewey" Hingtgen, 82, of 2814 Jackson St., died at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Zinkula officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.
He was born on March 21, 1927, in Dubuque, son of Nicholas and Della (Freeze) Hingtgen. He married Betty Wagner on June 24, 1950, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque.
Dewey enlisted in the Army in 1945 and was a veteran of World War II.
He worked at Farley Loetscher Manufacturing Company in Dubuque from 1943 to 1960. In 1960, Dewey began working at John Deere Dubuque Works, until his retirement in 1987. He also managed the bar at Creslanes Bowling Alley from 1960 until 1987.
He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. He also was a member of the UAW Local 94.
Dewey was quick to tell a joke and knew his way around a euchre table. For many years, he organized the John Deere bowling tournaments and a yearly bus trip to a Chicago Cubs game. He enjoyed having his family around him and loved to reminisce about stories of family and friends. He began the tradition of lining the streets of Oak Crest Drive with luminaries during the Christmas season.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Betty; three daughters, Vickie Dolter, of Dubuque, Ronda (boyfriend, Bo Schiel) Klar, of Dickeyville, Wis., and Tracey (Russ) Stecklein, of Dubuque; two sons, Randy (Katherine) Hingtgen, of Fon du Lac, Wis., and Mark Hingtgen, of Dubuque; 13 grandchildren, Tiffany Woodward, of Johnson Creek, Wis., Matthew Dolter, of Iowa City, Iowa, Jerrett (fiance, Kim Futrell) Klar, of Corinth, Texas, Jeff (Nikki) Klar, of Cuba City, Wis., Holly (Tim) Beauchamp, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Hewitt and Dwight Hingtgen, both of Fon du Lac, Wis., Jordan, Shelby and Michael Stecklein and Zachary Schreiber, Quinn Duwane Hingtgen and Brooke Hingtgen, all of Dubuque; three great-grandchildren, Samantha and Kaitlyn Woodward, of Johnson Creek, Wis., and Christopher Schreiber, of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Doris Hingtgen, of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Gerald Westemeyer, of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Donna Kuchemann, of Platteville, Wis.; and a brother-in-law, Bob (Carol) Wagner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Melvin, Justin and Gilbert; and two sisters, Lois O'Meara, of Iowa City, and Mary Lorraine (Gerald) Westemeyer, of Dubuque.
