Joe Glenn Gulledge Sr., 99, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Mr. Gulledge will lie in state beginning Tuesday, Jan. 1. Joe was born Aug. 5, 1913, in Edom. He attended the three-room school at Edom. He joined the Navy in 1931, was discharged in 1934 and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Joe enrolled in the University of Oklahoma in 1936. He played baseball at the university for two years and signed to play baseball for the Boston Braves (now Atlanta Braves) farm team in Hartford, Conn. He injured his right shoulder in spring training and could only play two years. In 1942 Joe reenlisted in the Navy as a chief petty officer and was discharged in 1945. In 1954, Joe enrolled in Steven F. Austin University and received a BBA degree in 1955. He went to work for the Internal Revenue Service in Fort Worth and retired in 1974. Joe married Viola Lewis in 1941. They were happily married until Viola's death on Feb. 17, 1995. In 1955, the Gulledge family (Joe Sr., Viola, Joe Jr. and Kathy) moved to Fort Worth. Joe and Viola joined Travis Avenue Baptist Church and both were very active in the church work. Joe loved his family and he loved Travis Avenue Baptist Church. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Gulledge, and son, Joe Glenn Gulledge Jr. Survivors: Daughter, Kathy Harris and husband, Sherman; grandchildren, Mike Bollin and Kevin Bollin and wife, Angela; and great-grandchildren, Brooke Maserang, Bayley Bollin and Bree Bollin.
