John Nottingham Hanson enrolled as a private in the Union Army of the Civil War for three years on Sept. 3, 1861. During March and April 1862 he was on special duty near Manassas, VA. Wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg, VA Dec 13, 1862. Wounded severely below the elbow. Mustered out June 30, 1865. He earned the rank of 1st Sgt. He lived on Green Lane, Manayunk, Philadelphia, PA and also 126 Church Street.
Member of Council No 50, O. U. A. M. and Grand Army of the Republic Post 12, Hetty A. Jones, Roxborough, and Post 15, General Gouverneur Kemble Warren, Manayunk. Reverend Stone officiated at his funeral.
