Delbert was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Farris to Joe Riley and Callie (Napier) Gist. He attended school in Farris, and then from 1938 to 1942 served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1942 Delbert joined the Army and received an Honorable Discharge in 1945. While in the service he received the American Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and the Victory Medal.
Delbert worked as an Ironworker after his time in the service. He retired in 1985 in California and moved to the Durant area. Delbert married Doris Hanley Dec. 6, 1993, in Las Vegas, Nev. He loved to travel and his other hobbies included dominos and puzzle books. He was of the Protestant faith.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Callie Gist; a sister, Gussie Standridge; and his first wife Neva Gist.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Gist, of the home; daughters, Jeanie Cameron of Colbert and Diane Houck and husband Richard of Seminole; 17 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother Elize Gist and wife Sandra of Carson, Nevada; sister LaVern McCormick of Arlington, Texas; brother-in-law J.C. Reynolds and wife Charlene of Denison, Texas; special nieces, nephews, numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
Family hour will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
Interment will be at Darwin Cemetery with J.C. Reynolds, Zack Hale, Stephen Houck, Rod Harbston, Richard Houck, Curtis Harris and Wayne Cauley serving as honorary pallbearers.
