Bugler Bucknell enlisted into the U.S. Army on August 24, 1870 at Cincinati OH. Bucknell was described as 21 yrs old, gray eyes, light hair, light complexion & 5'8". His listed civilian occupation was laborer.

On October 18, 1870, Bucknell was assigned as a bugler to Company B, 8th U.S. Cavalry, Ft Stanton NM. When his enlistment expired on August 24, 1875, he was honorably discharged at Ft Union NM. He reenlisted on September 23, 1875 at Cincinati OH. On October 22, 1875, Bucknell was assigned as a bugler to Company C 7th U.S. Cavalry, Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. Company C was commanded by Capt Tom Custer. Capt Custer was a two time Medal of Honor recipient & the brother of LTC George Armstrong Custer.

On the morning of June 25, 1876, before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Bucknell had been assigned to the pack train located at the rear of the column. When the column was divided into three battalions, Bucknell was returned to his company.

Company C rode with Custer's battalion. Bucknell was killed sometime during the fighting.

Bucknell's body was not identified. It was likely that his remains were first buried where they had been found on the battlefield.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

Not for fame or reward, not for place or for rank, not lured by ambition or goaded by necessity, but in simple obedience to duty as he understood it. He suffered all, sacrificed all, dared all, and died. Rest in peace, Bugler Bucknell.
