Pvt Carney was described as 5'4", grey eyes, black hair with a dark complexion. His listed civilian occupation was laborer. Carney enlisted into the army in New York, NY on March 13, 1866, for three years. On March 31, 1866, he was assigned to the 30th US Infantry at Potter's Station in Nebraska. Upon his discharge, Carney re-enlisted, & on February 7, 1873, he was assigned to F Company, 7th US Cavalry at Lousiville KY. He was killed during the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Carney was likely first buried, where his remains were found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
