| Birth: | Apr. 29, 1901 | | Death: | Jan. 7, 1989 | Known also as the "Showa Emperor," Hirohito was the 124th emperor of Japan. He ruled for over 62 years, making him the longest reigning emperor in Japan's history. During his rule, Japan progressed from a nation of financial depression to become an international economic power. He also ruled during the tragic days of the Second World War. Although he did not favor an allegiance with Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy, he was not able to disuade the Japanese military faction that controlled Japan's destiny in this regard. During the war, Hirohito continued to live in Tokyo in order to share the dangers and hardships of his people. Following the war, the recognition of emperor as a divine being was discontinued.
