German Field Marshal. He joined the German Army in 1892 and then in 1902, entered Germany's elite military academy. During World War I, von Rundstedt proved his exceptional abilities as a field commander. During World War II he commanded in various military campaigns in Poland, France, and Russia. On July 19, 1940, von Rundstedt was promoted to Field Marshal. He served as the supreme commander in the West from March of 1942 to March of 1945, except for a brief period in 1944. On December 16, 1944 von Rundstedt launched a deadly counteroffensive which later became known as the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he was held by the British for possible prosecution as a war criminal. In 1949, von Rundstedt was released because of ill health. (bio by: Mr. Badger Hawkeye)
