The Brig James arrived from England in 1635 and among the passengers were the barber-surgeon Ralph/1 Farnum with his wife Alice and their three children; Mary, Thomas, and Ralph.
Settling in Ipswich , Ralph's homestead was located on the Southerly side of High Street, a few rods west on the corner of North Main. He was voted to be the official town crier which meant he was paid to ring the bell, keep the meeting house clean, and proclaim in a loud voice any announcements of public importance.
n June of 1648 the widow Alice Farnum married Solomon Martin, a ship carpenter from Gloucester. By 1652 they had sold the house and lot in Ipswich and moved to Andover. In 1662 Alice conveyed the house and land of Solomon Martin (who had been out of the country for six or seven years) to Nathan Parker for 12 pounds.
