He was proud to be a HPD officer. I would later have the opportunity to work closely with him when he did a rotation though my division. Always smiling, Mark was always fun and upbeat.
Mark loved being a police officer and helping people as he worked the nightshift Traffic/Accident Division, his final assignment. He was truly dedicated to his duties, and especially wanted to save lives by removing drunk drivers off the streets of Houston. Mark would often come in to work on his night off to work the DWI Task Force. Sadly, it was one of those nights when he was killed.
Mark was scarcely a mile from the station when he was met head-on by a wrong-way drunk driver at the top of an overpass. It was too late to slow or even turn away. Officer Mark S. Zimmerman was killed instantly. The drunk driver, who had just left the convention center, was also killed.
It's hard to believe that Mark has been gone for 30 years now. It still seems like yesterday that Houston lost a good officer and we lost a dear friend and brother. We still miss you Mark.
** Thank you Susann for transferring Mark's memorial to me. **
