J. Wathen, or "Mike" as he was usually called, attended St. Joseph's Prep School in Bardstown. His younger brother, George M. "Little Mike" Fowler, recalled going to the movies with him. Following his schooling, he went to work in Johnny's Tailor Shop, where he eventually became co-owner. While working at the tailor shop, he met his future wife, Mary Frances Marattay, as she delivered milk to the shop. It was a true 'mixed marriage' of the time: the groom's family being staunch Catholic and the bride's family being staunch Baptists. The couple married in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
They had two children, Elizabeth Linda Gore, who died in infancy and Frances Dianna.
Mike doted on his daughter, Dianna, and she fondly recalls him taking her driving in his lap and letting her steer the car and building a her a sandbox (which she then refused to play in, because she did not like the sand), as he felt the commercial ones had too many rough edges.
Mike passed away suddenly following an appendicitis operation, from which he was believed to be recovering nicely.
