Walt Beal was born on Tuesday, December 13, 1892, in Omaha, NE, the son of Rudolph and Amelia Beal.
Walt's first marriage was to Hazel Anderson in Omaha. Hazel, 31 years old, died in Omaha on January 3, 1925. That union produced 1 son and 2 daughters: Phyllis, Burnice, and Walt Jr.; Phyllis and Walt both died in infancy, neither living 6 weeks.
On Wednesday, December 12, 1928, Walt married Hazel Hoff Marvin, also in Omaha. Walt and his second wife Hazel had no children.
Walt attended Omaha Central HS.
Walt worked as a traveling salesman of barber supplies from 1915 to 1940. Then from 1940 until his death in 1973 he operated the restaurant Beal's Grill at 24th and California Streets in Omaha, across the street from Creighton University. He lived upstairs above the restaurant.
He also operated a Beal's Grill at Lake Okoboji, IA, in the summers, closing his Omaha restaurant until college classes resumed in the fall. In the summers he and Hazel lived in one of two lakeside cottages on Lake Okoboji; the cottages were named "Brown Haze" (for Walt's wife Hazel and her daughter Brownie).
Walt also owned racehorses and loved horse racing, "the sport of kings." His favorite track was Omaha's Ak-Sar-Ben, which he called "Westside Cleaners."
Walt was a Creighton University legend for his repartee with students and for giving unsecured loans to dozens and dozens of needy students, some of which were never repaid.
Walt was usually seen with a cigar and often in a hat. His language was usually profane. He has been immortalized across the street from Beal's Grill in the Creighton University Student Center with a permanent display called "Memora-Beal-ia."
Walt, 80 years old, died on Saturday, June 30, 1973, at his home above Beal's Grill in Omaha. His wake with 7:30 p.m. rosary was held at Heafey and Heafey Mortuary in Omaha on July 2. Following a 10:00 a.m. July 3 funeral Mass at Creighton University's St. John's Catholic Church, he was buried at Calvary Cemetery, Omaha.
