from The Lincoln Star (March 4, 1938):

Samuel G. Hoff, 71 [sic], of Omaha, has seen his horses cross the finish line for the last time. He died suddenly of a stroke Wednesday night at Deming, N.M., enroute to Lincoln with his race horses: Prince Ballot and Carefully.

For the last several years, Mr. Hoff made horse racing his business. His horses have appeared at fairs here and ran last season. Active in Omaha politics several years ago, he served in the 1913 legislature.

Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Beale [sic] of Omaha, a granddaughter and two stepchildren, Ruth Thompson of Bassett, and Gilbert Buhrmann of Garrison. The body is enroute to Lincoln.
