Mary (Bates) Humeston was born on Thursday, May 19, 1910, in Melrose, IA, the daughter of Joe and Maggie (Morrison) Bates.
On Tuesday, September 30, 1930, Mary married Dwight Humeston at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Melrose. Her cousin Marguerite introduced them; the next day Dwight asked her for a date.
Mary lived her entire life in the Melrose/Albia, IA, area. She graduated from Melrose HS in 1927 and attended Albia Junior College for 2 years.
She and Dwight owned and operated the Humeston Funeral Home and the Humeston Furniture Store in Albia until their retirement. Mary drove an ambulance; she was a good driver, but a very fast driver, too.
Mary was a member of Albia St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, and she was a three-time past president of Chapter H of the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood.
Mary's hobbies included knitting, sewing, quilting, and reading.
Mary and Dwight had 1 son and 3 daughters: Peggy, Tony, Sandra, and Helen.
Mary's husband Dwight died on October 11, 1979. Mary lived as a widow for the next 15½ years at the family home at 802 F Avenue.
Mary, 84 years old, died from the after-effects of a stroke on Monday, March 20, 1995, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia. Her wake was held at 7:30 p.m. at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Albia on Tuesday, March 21. Following a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass said by Father Thomas Doyle at Albia St. Mary's Church, she was buried beside her husband Dwight in St. Mary's Cemetery, Albia, on Wednesday, March 22.
