OBITUARY: The Richland Observer

Carl Barnes, 94, In Business for 60 Years, Dies

Carl Barnes, actively associated with the business life of Richland Center for about 60 years, beginning in January, 1890, died Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Richland Hospital, aged 94.

Mr. Barnes, a member of the A.H. Krouskop firm and one of the residual legatees of Mr. Krouskop, began as a bookkeeper when he came to Richland Center at the age of 19 from his home in Boaz. At the age of 77 he took his first steps toward retirement with the sale of his business interests to his partner, the late William S. McCorkle. He retained at that time the feed mills at Richland Center and Boaz.

He was born Nov. 23, 1870, at Boaz, his parents being William and Mary Fries Barnes. He was married Aug. 22, 1906, to Winnie Fowler, who survives him.

In Richland Center Mr. Barnes has served on the Richland Hospital board, the board of education and the board of directors of the Farmers & Merchants Bank. He was a member of Trinity Methodist church.

In 1962 Mr. and Mrs. Barnes gave a gift of $15,500 for the purchase of a house in Platteville for the use of Wesley Foundation.

Mrs. And Mrs. Barnes also purchased a house on Second Street which, after remodeling the kitchen, they presented to Trinity church for a parsonage. More recently they gave an initial gift of $20,000 to the Education Fund of the church, a program in which Mr. Barnes was intensely interested even as recently as two weeks before his death.

His funeral was Monday at the Lunecschloss Hansen chapel with pastor, the Rev. Wesley Hunter, officiating. Burial was in the Richland Center cemetery.

Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Miss Mary Barnes, Platteville, Mrs. Earl Shannon, Albuquerque, and Miss Margaret Barnes, Cierra Madres, Calif., and a sister, Miss Lulu Barnes, Richland Center.
