Matthew David MOORHEAD was the son of Matthew MOORHEAD, Jr. and Eliza SNODGRASS. He was born around 1846 in Iowa, most likely in Washington Co. About 1868 he married Melatiah "Mellie" KITCHEN and they were the parents of four children, Betrand K., Lillie May, Laura E., and Orin H. MOORHEAD.

Betrand and Lillie were both born in Iowa and the family was listed in the 1870 Henry Co., IA census.

Laura was born 1878 in Colorado. The couple and their first three children were listed in the 1880 Douglas Co., CO census. Matthew was also listed in the 1880 Park Co., CO census as a miner along with his brother Joseph A. MOORHEAD. In 1883, Matthew is listed in the Greenland, Douglas Co., CO business directory as a butcher and Orin was born in CO the following year.

The census records in the 20th century become somewhat confusing but apparently Matthew and Mellie divorce.

Mellie is listed on the 1900 Arapahoe Co., CO census living in the household of Betrand and his family along with Orin. She is listed as being married for 32 years. I have not found Matthew's census record.

Mellie is next listed on the 1910 Multnomah Co., OR census as a private housekeeper in her half-brother Isaac K. HATFIELD's house. Again, I have not found Matthew's record and Mellie is listed as a widow.

In 1920, I cannot find Mellie but Matthew is located in Douglas Co., CO as a "roomer" and divorced.

Matthew died in 1925.

Finally, Mellie reappears in the 1930 Jefferson Co., CO census living between Betrand's family and Bertrand's son Myrl M. MOORHEAD and his family. She is listed as a widow.

I believe Matthew and Mellie divorced between 1900 and 1910. It is possible they divorced earlier and Mellie still was listed as married. I've come across other records where a divorced woman has been listed as widowed as Mellie was in 1910. If for some reason they were not divorced by 1910, Matthew is definitely listed as divorced by 1920. What ever year the divorce took place, they are never listed in the same household beginning in 1900.

Several volunteers were kind and looked for the marker for me at the cemetery but there appears to be none. Donna Scheer added the photo of the plot where his body rests.
