Country Music Singer and Bandleader. Doc and Chickie Williams were inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2009. They also were inducted into Jamboree USA's Walkway of Stars as two of Jamboree's most enduring and popular entertainers. Doc Williams was born with the name Andrew John Smik, Jr., in 1914. His parents had immigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia at the beginning of the century. His future wife and partner, Chickie Williams, was born with the name Jessie Wanda Crupe in 1919. Doc started out in country music playing with the Kansas Clodhoppers in the 1930s. He later formed his own group and went on the air in 1937 on WWVA radio from Wheeling, West Virginia. His group was called Doc Williams and the Border Riders. Doc met his future wife, who would later take the stage name Chickie Williams, at the Reawood Dance Hall in Hickory, Pennsylvania, after she wrote to Doc requesting an appearance there by Doc Williams and the Border Riders. Doc and Chickie were married in 1939 at Winchester, Virginia. Chickie began performing with Doc in 1946. She had a hit record of her own in 1948. It was an original arrangement of the hymn "Beyond the Sunset" and it reached number 3 on Billboard magazine's Top 100 Country Music Songs. Fans across the United States and Canada tuned in each week on Jamboree USA for the Doc Williams show.
