BARBARA LEE MORRISSEY was born February 9, 1944 in Huron, SD and died July 23, 1994 in Phoenix, AZ at age 50.

She was the daughter of Caroline Schmaltz and SSgt Maurice D. Pershing who died on Feb. 22, 1944 while serving his Country during WWII. Barbara was just 2 weeks old when her father was killed in action. He is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Limberg, Netherlands.

On Sept. 4, 1948, her Mother married Michael Morrissey in Aberdeen. They later moved to Huron, SD. Then on June 5, 1949, Barbara's baby brother "Chuck" was born. This was the family that nurtured her into adulthood.

At age 2, Barbara was diagnosed with polio, but she did not allow that illness to define her life. She finished high school and graduated from college with the help of fellow classmates who carried her in her wheelchair up and down stairwells. This was long before public buildings were "wheelchair friendly".

Following graduation, Barbara decided to try life on her own, and she moved to Phoenix, AZ with the assistance of the Shriners Organization. This was a kindness she never forgot. Her Mother helped her get settled into an apartment that would meet her special needs.

In the following years, Barbara learned to drive using a specially-designed car and went to work for the State of AZ.

Life was so exciting for Barbara. She made friends easily in Phoenix and put alot of trust in them when they encouraged her to try new experiences that were outside of her comfort zone. With their help, she was able to enjoy sitting in the swimming pool on a lawn chair without having to wear cumbersome protective gear. She enjoyed the Haunted Mansion ride and the Pirates of the Carribean ride at Disneyland and was fascinated by the Electrical Parade. While she was visiting CA, she found it thrilling to ride her wheelchair out to the breakwater at Dana Point to feel the mist of the breaking surf from the Pacific Ocean. She was so excited when she got to ride a ski lift and take a boat cruise along the San Pedro Harbor. The simple pleasures of riding a swing or sitting in a rocking chair were marvels to her. She enjoyed the years she had which were many more than expected.

Barbara was survived by her mother, step-father, her brother Chuck, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many devoted friends. Barbara's friendship was truly a treasure.

Her father Michael Morrissey died Jan. 25, 1995 at age 87.
Her brother Charles T. "Chuck" Morrissey died Aug. 3, 2002 at age 53.
Her mother Caroline Morrissey died April 3, 2005 at age 85.
Barbara is buried next to them at St. Martin Cemetery in Huron, SD.
