HOMER R. WARD SR., 93
LIMESTONE - Homer R. Ward Sr., 93, beloved husband of the late Chrystal E. (Waddell) Ward, died Jan 24, 1995 at a Caribou healthcare facility after a brief illness. He was born in Limestone, March 18, 1901, the son of William Baker and Ardelia (Willey) Ward. A graduate of Limestone High School, he joined the United States Army soon afterwards, serving for several years in the early 1920s with the coastal artillery batteries at Fort Williams in Portland. After military service, he returned to Limestone and began a 48 year career as a potato farmer, retiring in 1970.
Active in civic affairs, he was a member and past chairman of the Limestone School Committee, serving from 1936 to 1956. He was a Rotarian with more than 40 years of perfect attendance. He was a past Rotary president and was also made a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1972, he was awarded Limestone's Citizen of the Year award by the Limestone Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Maine Extension Service and the Limestone Grange. He served Limestone as a representative in the 101st and the 102nd Maine State Legislature. He was a lifelong devoted member of the Limestone United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Homer Ward Jr. and Richard Ward, both of Limestone; two daughters, Patricia Kilpatrick of Limestone and Sharon Fuehrer of Peachham, VT; one sister, Evelyn Ward of Caribou; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Jan. 27 at the Limestone United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gwen Chase, pastor, officiating. Pallbearers were Limestone Rotarians Paul D. Haines, C. Peter Huntress, Lloyd McLaughlin and Arthur Thompson. Honorary pallbearers were Verne Weatherhead, Bruce Billings, Bernard McCormack and Carl Ireland.
Spring interment will be at Webster Cemetery, Limestone. Funeral arrangements were by Lancaster-Morgan Funeral Home, Caribou. Donations in his memory may be made to either the Limestone Rotary Scholarship Fund or the Limestone United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
